How to choose MMA gloves
Read this if you are thinking to take up MMA training or want some useful information in the differences of MMA glove styles.
Padding
Fact, KO's occur more in MMA than boxing due to the impact and that MMA gloves are not as padded as a boxing glove. Make sure your glove has plenty of padding but not so much that it stops movement or is that bulky you can't perform your follow up grappling techniques. A good way to see if a MMA glove is well designed is the padding is incorporated on the sides of the glove so you can work the ground and pound hammer fist strikes.
Fingerless or covered fingers?
So you may have seen gloves that offer a covered padded area over the fingers but underneath you still have the versatility to grapple. These gloves would be more classified as a bag / sparring glove and are ok. The only restriction would be the flow of technique from bag work to grappling or takedowns during training unless you choose to be interrupted and change into your fingerless MMA gloves. There are a number of types of hybrid MMA gloves on the market.

Design Style
Basically depending on what fighting goal you want to engage in you can select from a number of MMA glove styles. The main 2 which are your open palm fighting style or training/hybrid gloves that usually incorporate a thumb guard. From a personal opinion, any glove that entirely covers the palm just does not feel as good.
Grade and material
If you are planning to compete you will need to find out what the regulations of the fight insist. But mostly open palm style gloves that are fingerless like what are used in the UFC will be a likely style. Some will also ask for a grade or weight which is usally 4oz to 6oz. In relation to material, 100% cow or buffalo leather is ideal for strength and durability but in saying that other synthetic gloves have proven to give great value and performance without trouble.
